Read a horror story as a kid about this legend to this day it freaks me out.

Wendigo. Native Canadian legend of an evil spirit that makes a steady, loud, "trees howling in the wind" sound at night that slowly drives you insane, and you either peel off your clothes and freeze to death in the cold Canadian winter, or become a cannibal.

Trying to sleep at night and hear the wind howling? Ya have fun with that.
