During the summer late at night, I was twelve at the time, watching TV alone in my room. I was getting tired so I turned everything off to go to sleep. I kept hearing rustling in the kitchen which I had assumed was my step dad, who being a night owl was often up late at night. I started thinking in my mind, what would I do if it was actually an intruder. I ran through several options of how to respond including grabbing a knife from the kitchen counter. I had used the knife earlier that evening and I knew exactly where I had laid it on the counter. My train of thought is broken when I heard someone come down the hallway towards my room. I quickly closed my eyes to act asleep when my door started to open. It was to no avail, I couldn't keep my eyes still. I opened my eyes to see a lanky Ichobod Crane looking guy at the foot of my bed leaning over to see me. He was at least 6'5" and very thin. He reaches a hand towards me and I jumped up and told him very assertively get the *&#! out of my room. He is immediately apologetic and says he's looking for a friend that used to live there. We were now standing in the hallway and the strangest thing...he asks to use the restroom. My first concern was my little sister sleeping in the next room so I tell him sure go ahead. That gives me time to go check on her which she's ok and sleeping. I turn around and he's still right behind me but now with his pants undone. I turn and head right for the kitchen, grab that same knife I pictured earlier and point it at him. I say much louder this time for him to get out of the house now. He started shaking, apologizing and went out the front door which I locked behind him. Only then did the adrenaline and shock hit me. It took me a minute to calm myself to wake my parents to call the police. The police dusted for prints and determined he had been watching me through the window over the back wall. My room which was the last one down the hall was the only room he'd approached. I was able to identify him from a book of offenders at the police station the next day. I consider myself very lucky and keep a knife at my bedside even to this day.
