When I grew up, our doorbell didn't work. I don't remember it ever working. So one night, our neighbors house caught fire, eventually burning to the ground. In the middle of the night, one of the kids living there came running to the door in his underwear, freezing in the snow. He rang the bell, and it worked. I remember trying the bell the very next day, and it hasn't worked since.
